Bad sounds normally mean bad things (normally)
Have a gander at your plugs n leads just encase, make sure u dint knock the LT lead off the coil, silly thing to do that stops it from starting it does.
Err, starter motor connects to the engine through the flywheel housing i think, aint stripped back that far yet, but it has teeth and wotnot so make sure you've got it all snug before u try turning it over.
And the last thing is that other things turn over when u turn the key, eg, rad fan, dizzy, altenator that sorta thing.
Really i dont know mine aint done that yet, but stare at it for a while then give it a technical whack and try again, lol
Nate.

take the starter out and check the teeth on the fly wheel, could be they are warn and the starter isn't engaging properly

Glad you got it fixed
9 times out of 10, it's always a flat battery that gives a machine gun sound.
For future references (and others searching this site for answers), this could be a couple of things, if it a similar noise that a starter motor makes when there is not enough voltage in the battery to turn the engine ( sounds like "A-TAKA-TAKA-TAKA-TAKA....") ?
If so, this could be that :
A ) battery is flat or has a faulty cell.
B ) Faulty connection on battery terminals or faulty main cable (+ cable) / faulty earth strap.
C ) could be a faulty connection on the solenoid or failing solenoid.
There could also be some problem that is stoping the starter from turning, check that the engine can be turned over / is not seized (try a bump-start) and also worth checking that the starter is alligned correctly and bolted in place properly.
