Hi There,
I have an '86 Mayfair and I keep getting noises from the fan belt. Basically it gives the squeling noise which gets worse when revved.
The belt has been replaced twice (each time it had come loose) and it then sounds fine but the problem comes back again after a while.
I live in an area where the roads are pretty bad for potholes and I have noticed that the car will be fine on a nice smooth road but after I have (unavoidably) gone onto one of these dodgy roads the noise comes back. Sometimes it goes away again after some time on a nice road again but I want to find a way of keeping it running ok at all times because unfortunatly some bad roads can't be avoided in my area.
Does it sound possible that a bumpy road could knock the fan belt offline a bit to cause the noise? Or is it more likely this is a coincedence? If it is possible though, is there something I could have done to the suspension or something to make it run smoother over the bumps?
Thanks very much,

Fan Belt Noise

Fan belt squeal often occurs when the belt is not tight enough, any chance that the alternator retaining bolt isn't done up tightly enough and the jolt of going over pot holes is moving the alternator a little and loosening the fan belt slightly?

Hi,
The last time the fan belt was changed (end of August), the mechanic checked the alternator and said it was ok but he had to fix an oil leak though and thought that as he didnt see anything else wrong with the engine that it might have been the oil dripping onto the belt and causing degredation. And it was working great until I had to do an airport run and couldn't avoid the dodgy road leading to motorway
