After fitting a new oil pump and cam plate triangle, the cam seems tight and doesn't move completely freely. Is that normal at first? Fyi oil pump bolts are to correct torque 10.

Did you fit new cam bearings, or a new cam? Is the head on with push rods & valve springs?

No, definitely not normal. I assume the chain and valvegear are not fitted yet, and you are just spinning the shaft and pump.

It makes me suspect that the shaft is effectively too long and is under pressure from the pump at onne end and plate at the other. I seem to recall that there were certain differences between engines, and some combinations of bits would require a shim, particularly a 1275 pump in a smaller block.

What engine, pump and cam is it?

Cam and bearings have not been changed.

Yep engine out, no valve gear on ( well apart from the cog, helping me turn it) just spinning by hand. Feels stiff on each cam of the pump but the pump spins freely off the engine.

1275 a+ block, sw5 cam Turbo pump, replacing turbo pump. The old triangle had quite a deep groove on it, i might see what its like with it back on.
Actually thinking about it the new triangle was ok before i put the new pump on, suppose i'll have to try the different combos to findthe problem. Should there be any max sideways movement like with the crank shaft

Just put the old pump back on and turns fine. Its as if the the slot on the put is a couple on mm too much ( may be?)

Just put the new one back on, torqued up and ok. One cam in pump got a bit of bite but moves round. Perhaps pump just needs a bit of use.

I found on my engine that a Cam bearing had not been put in all of the way so when I torqued the oil pump up it seized the whole thing solid! Just a point for future reference:P

You know what... I wrongly assume the inners of the new pump would not need any attention. I'll check it out in the morning.
