Warm hatch wonders

Posted Image

With fewer than 50 MG Metro Turbos left on the road in the UK, it’s time to celebrate one of the most fun sporting hatchbacks the 1980s – by comparing it with the big selling Ford Fiesta XR2 and cultish Peugeot 205GTI.
And as Keith Adams of Austin Rover Online reckons, what was best then, might not be necessarily be best now….....

I've got a fast mini, want a fast xr3, and most definitely want a 205 with a 1.9 306gti engine!!

Unfortunately, the metro turbo doesn't come close..

i don't think the xr2 or mg turbo can hold anything on the 205.
If only peugeot kept up the gti brand and followed the original hot hatch idea

IMO the 205 gti handles like a bag of excrement. my brother had one and i drove it a few times. when i got into my old mini i had it really made me smile and love minis even more. it might be because i had a mini that had a few upgrades and it took driving another car to make me realise how good they actually hold the road and corner.

not sure how the XR2 handles. the Metro turbo handles ok but it understeers in the wet.

I still like the XR2, it was the car to have when I was 18/19, although a mate had one and my 1.6 cavalier was faster!!

Come close to owning one a few times but just not closed the deal. I did nearly swap an XR3i cabby for a 1.6 pug GTi once though.

Apparently 205's are a bit sketchy on handling and road holding from one 205 to another. There werent that consistent.. but its not fact, but was from a mulitple 205 owner :D

The 6r4 doesnt have a single metro part on it ;D

They were probably ok when new, but these days the cars can be really quite different with worn bushes, dodgy allignment and tyres. There are probably quite a few crashed repaired ones of there too :P

It's quite sad to see how far behind British Leyland were even in the 1980s with the Metro Turbo. :( 4 speed box, pushrods, a carburettor and poor rust proofing; it was a world away from the 205.

My dad had a 205 GT, not the GTi though lol >_< , he loved that car, said it handled great. So I'm going with 205 GTi although I'd have an XR2 any day!

No Prizes for guessing what one I'd choose :D

My friends and I had all these cars in the mid 90's and I have to say the XR2 and the Metro weren't even in the 1.6 205's league.

I'll have too confess that the Pug's really don't do anything for me.... I'd have the XR2 over all of them! Second too Minis I'm a bit of an old school Ford fan! :D
