Hi
1990 mayfair auto 998
The kickdown facility doesn't work. I'm assuming the mechanism needs adjusting. I believe I need to lock the linkage at the transmission end with a rod or drill bit of adequate size and then adjust at the carb end. has anyone had to do this and do they have any advice? Do I need to remove the manifold or do I get to the bottom end from under the car? any thoughts appreciated.

The auto box will not function properly if that rod (governer) from the back of gear box is not connected to where the throttle arm is on the carb.
You need to fit this while the carb is still on
There will be a proper adjustment but on mine I just adjusted it so there is no play & has worked for me just fine for months now
The car needs to be at normal operating temp & adjust it to suite the link in the tickover position

Thanks for that. The rod is connected both ends but no kickdown. So I lock the transmission end in place and then adjust the throttle end so there is no play in the linkage?

That is what I done. I take it your carb is all set up properly ? Of so there is actual figures to adjust it too. I can have a look in my Haynes on a minute for you pal

Haynes States
For the adjustment a tachometer is needed ,
Start & run engine until it reaches normal operating temp,
Ensure carb settings are correct
Disconnect governor control rod at carb
Insert a 0.25 in (6.4mm) diameter rod through the hole in the governer control rod bellcrank lever & into the hole in transmission casing,
Slacken the locknut & adjust the length of the rod to suit the carb linkage in the idle position,
Reconnect the governor control rod to the carb, tighten the ballpoint lock nut & remove the checking rod from the bell crank lever .

Thanks mate. the bottom end of the linkage is accessed from underneath the car? Have I got that right?

If it were me I would get it up on axle stands so you have access to either & see what works for you ? Remember when you have sorted all that out give your oil a check. Autos need good quality clean oil to stay sweet as it wears incredibly fast being used as hydraulic fluid at the same time

Do you use 10w40 as per the book?

Unlike yours My Mini is a 92 & recommended 20-50 Though speaking to specialist & from own experience 10w40 really is best, it's much smoother & less wearing on clutch plates
Only downside is if needs to be changed more

Yeah. I'd sort of got that impression from others but it's nice to hear the opinion of a below auto owner.
