Hi,

I bought some Metal Ready from the makers of POR 15. I wanted to ask what your experiences are using it?

I wire brushed the metal and then sprayed it with Metal Ready but when i came back to it next day there is a light coating of rust over metal where there wasnt any before.

Am I using it incorrectly?

Reading their website it says "METAL-READY™ is a water-based, zinc phosphate metal etching and preparation solution".

Now I'm not certain, but surely that just means that you've pretty much left an etched metal surface bare overnight, so... it's likely to rust?

true but I thought it wa supposed to leave a zinc coating over the metal ready to be either painted or welded to.

So - are you supposed to use it, wipe it all off and then weld or prime it straight away?

Find all the information you need here:

http://www.por15.com...talreadyreg.pdf

To answer your question (It's on the link I just pasted):

"Must I wash off the Metal-Ready after using it?
Yes…If Metal Ready is not rinsed off you will get a large accumulation of zinc phosphate on the surface which will affect proper adhesion with POR-15.
After you rinse/wipe with wet rag, you can dry the surface with warm air(hair dryer) or towels to cut down on the surface rust.
However, because POR-15 is a non-porous coating and can be applied directly over rust, you CAN apply it directly over surface rust.
Special note: Metal Ready is designed to leave behind a zinc phosphate coating which creates the best surface to coat with POR-15."

I left mine for a few days and didn't get any surface rusting.

Following the instructions with por15 stuff is vital, it really is key you follow them word for word.

As above, did you wash down and dry the surface after the metal ready application?

Ok - I need to read the instructions - I get it :proud:

Thanks folks. For me the usage is going to be: -

1. Treat the metal
2. Wash and dry the metail
3. spray with etch through primer

Thanks,

As MIke says, follow the instructions to the letter.

Oh, and don't get any POR15 on your skin.
