heres a photo of the back of my shot alternator, in the wiring harness is the standard 3 pin plug, my question is will this alturnator from mini spares fit straight in? http://www.minispare...ators.aspx|Back

there isn't a phto of the back of it. it's a 1976 MK3 wiring harness.

i think the 70 amp one would be a massive over kill

Thanks

Yes it will fit.

Your old alternator looks very much like my 70amp alternator from the rear.

Cheers Lrostroke

yeah from what i've seen in the past theres two different designs to the backs of alternators, i just wondered if they were interchangable,

the argument for and against 70amp alternators has been done to death on here and i would never use the full 70amp potential so i thought i'd save myself a couple of quid and get the 45 if it fitted my wiring

Can anyone say what the spade connector is for at aprox 9 o clock position on the above picture? When I was nipping up the bolt on the alternator bracket i caught it a few times with my spanner which was fun. Tested it and its a permenant live.

Did you catch the spade connector or the threaded terminal, the threaded terminal is live, its an alternative connection point for the main charge wire to the battery (via solenoid)

Oooh, not sure now, I recall the spanner got really hot very quickly then I brushed it again and it sparked. tested the spade with a tester and it gave 12volts, did not try anything else.

Most likely you caught the terminal, the spade is in a recess.
