can a 998cc mini engine be taken out through the top with the brake servo in place??????

You have to split the master off the vacuum unit with the 2 bolts that are there and bend it (carefully) out of the way and then yes, you can. It's easier if you remove the oil filter housing and dizzy but that isn't essential.

I removed the alternator, dizzy, oil filter, coil and starter motor. It's just easiest if yuo take off as much as you can to avoid damaging them

Apologies, we remove the alternator and coil too. I personally see very little benefit from removing the starter motor.
If you are using an engine crane then what I've said is fine but if you are lifting out by hand then remove as much as you possibly can.
As far as ease, we probably remove and refit 2-3 engines per week so you learn how much time you can save by leaving stuff on and as long as you are careful and watch the engine as you lift, it is loads easier.
(Don't forget the speedo cable!)

I have to say that you'll find it less tricky removing the big vacuum servo, removing its just 2 mins, you'll same time imho.

Yeah to be honest I'm sure the starter motor would have been fine but I tend to go down the belt and braces route with everything

It depends on how each person prefers to do it, I have never found the vacuum bit to be in the way at all. The answer to your question is yes, you can take the engine out without fully removing the servo. The remove everything method is fine if you are only doing it once.
