I put a quick shifter in my 1966 mini deluxe but have had a lot of trouble getting it to engage second or it will pop out of gear. This is happening even after taking it to the mechanics 2x, having the engine out and gearbox split from the block to check the internals. So far they have found no problems with the box.

I put the original gearstick back in the rod change mechanism but it is much too loose. So loose that to get first I have to push the lever under the dash and second is so far back it touches the passenger seat. I know the mechanic adjusted the linkages for the quick shift so I imagine I need to readjust it back again.

I couldn't find a how to, or any useful info via the search function so am hoping some kind soul will be able to describe a step by step guide for me. or, is this a job best left to the experts of can it be tackled by someone prepared to take their time? It is a rod change box.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

The only real way to adjust the selector is by altering the length of the top rod. If you are not throwing the selector forks enough to get 2nd fully home then you need to shorten the top rod; we;re taking a few mm.

Problem is, the rod is only easy to lenghten, not shorten.

The issue with cheapy quickshifts is usually the ball is over-sized, remove the stick, sand the ball down a bit an re-test.

Thanks for the replies, it is a KAD qucikshift so thought it would be good. I will try taking a smidgen off the ball and see if that helps.

Cheers

My brother had no end of problems with the KAD selector, exactly as you describe. There were other issues, but the lenght of the top rod was the final fiddling he did to get it working, it's nice now though.

It is a rod change, the car has a 70's Leyland 1275 engine it.

That's the great thing about Australia, the bodies last longer then the mechanicals..... When I stripped it back there was only a few small spots of rust under the rear windows and one spot under the front windscreen seal.

The for a rod change to be fitted into a 1966 mini then it must have some form of home grown mounting at the rear...

Normally there would be two cotton reel mounts which attach the remote unit to the body, if these fail or degrade, they make for a very sloppy gear change as not only are you moving the gearstick but also the remote unit...

Check that this is securely mounted in your application, it should not be solid mounted as it needs to move with the engine, and can lead to gears being knocked out under deceleration.

If that is all ok then it's down to the ball on the end of the gearstick and the 'socket' or rod change extension eye into which it fits.
