Hi
My mini is an early mk1, 850cc. The petrol sender unit has a cork gasket, and to prevent it from leaking fuel, I soaked the gasket in thin ol for several hours before installing it. I was advised to do this to prevent the gasket from drying out over a period of time.
Anyway, it worked for a while, but has started leaking again. I have rechecked the screws, and they are all tight. is there anythng else I can do to prevent the leak, such as a different type of gasket being available?
I have been told that `gasket blue' should not be used, as it will not last very long. The gasket is circlular, with holes for the screws all around.
Any ideas? Can I get, and indeed use a gasket of different material such as rubber?
Thanks
John

Hi John. A rubber gasket will probably just squish out of the joint for the bolt-on sending unit. However, you may be able to find and make your own gasket from Buna-N (nitrile) rubber sheet with cloth molded in. That MAY work as long as gas does not wick down along the embedded fibers.
You can use gasket sealant on the cork as long as it is not RTV (silicone rubber sealant). Over here two products that come to mind are Aviation-Form-A-Gasket and Permatex-2. Both are non-hardening sealants that are not affected by gasoline. I am sure there must be some U.K. equivalents. Permatex is a part of Loctite which in turn is part of Henkel so there MAY be U.K. distributors for both of the products I mentioned.
