You can de-cat it with a decat pipe, essentially you take out the cat and replace it for a pipe. Sportex and Maniflow make them to my knowledge, not sure if it'll past the MOT like it though, just put the cat back on every time the mot comes around ;-)

as a carb car the cat is next to scrap anyway, but these days would keep it just in case the rules change

minimal gains to be had from doing it and it could affect your running. Some say you get a deeper sound. I think its barely noticeable to be honest. Try it and see what you reckon. Its only 4 bolts and takes 10 mins to change.

You could just smash the guts out of it to keep it looking standard, seeing as you'll only have to pass a carb emission test.

Due to the vehicle being used after 1st of august 1992 it qualifies for a 'catalyst' emissions test irrelivant if it has a carb or not, athough you can get round it if the engine has been changed for an older version but proof must be given to the tester. i have a 1994 spi cooper s and i have removed the cat, found it to be partially blocked with carbon so wouldnt of been good for performance but i know i will have to refit for the next mot, also try and check your ignition timing, i found on mine the distributer was way too far advanced, it used to backfire awfully when the engine was cold, adjusted now and runs fine :)

Unless your cat is clogged, removing or gutting it wont make any performance difference.
