Hi can anyone help. Speedo on my 1986 998cc mini has stopped working. The cable is rotating when not connected but once connected to the back of the speedometer it doesn't work. Have tried it on two different speedos and it doesn't work on either. Fairly new speedo cable which was bought last year. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

You say the cable is rotating, how?
I mean, are you tooling about in the car with no speedo or just spinning the cable in the driveway?

When it's driven up the road and speedo disconnected the cable can be seen to be turning but as soon as it's re-attached to the back of the speedometer, the speedo fails to work. V frustrating especially as we are trying to sell the car and it's a bit embarrasing with a speedo not working! Any help gratefully recieved.

Stick a match or something in the back of the speedo and give it a spin. Don't take much to make the needle move, see what happens.

Also look at the hole in the back of the speedo and the end of the cable. The original cable design had the end swaged into a square profile to mate with a square drive hole in the back of the speedometer. Later cables sometimes have the end of the cable swaged into an oval shape. That oval shape can be too small or rounded to engage the corners of the square drive hole in the speedo.
