So Stella was running rich, about 5% mixture so I took it down to about 2.5%. She's definitely running a lot smoother, and less thirsty. When she was running rich she used to run on occasionally when I turned the engine off, but now that i've reduced the mixture she does it nearly every time...what can i do to stop it? Thanks in advance :)

Others will tell you to do things like adjust the timing, run higher octane fuel, or de-coke the head. I suggest something very different. If your engine otherwise runs well and you are pleased with its fuel economy and performance, get in the habit of stalling the engine

To stall the engine (and you need to get into the habit of doing this EVERY time you stop the engine), come to where you want to park. Push in the clutch pedal and select 4th gear. With your right foot on the brake pedal, turn the ignition key "off". SIMULTANEOUSLY as you turn the key off, slowly release the clutch pedal. With the car in gear the engine will smoothly and quickly stall coming to a complete stop without running on.

It is important that you get in the habit of doing this every time, not once the run-on has started. While you can stall an engine that is running on, it is easier on the engine bearings and less upsetting to you to stall the engine every time you turn the key to the off position.

hmm..would stalling it everytime damage the car at all over time? (I'm a noob..sorry!) how difficult is it to adjust the timing/de-coke the head? Thanks for your help :)

No. If stalling the engine time after time would damage the car then so would every standing start at a traffic light.

The important thing is to prevent the engine from running on as the combustion is not controlled. I believe most pundits point to possible damage to the lower end of the engine (bearings/crank) if run on is not prevented or addressed.

There are lots of chemical and water based remedies to de-coke the combustion chambers without cylinder head removal. Google will provide lots of information on the subject. Engine timing is easily adjusted but best done if you have a timing light (although many will tell you it can be done by ear). Others will post soon with their suggestions on how to address timing, mixture, and removing carbon. I just don't bother. It is too easy to prevent the run on by stalling.
