Hello All,

I'm about to start building my next motor, however I've realised there is too many cams to choose from and I can't make my mind up! I also don't know whether to use 1.5:1 rockers too.

The build is going to be as follows but any suggestions are welcome.

1275 bored to 1293 10.5:1 cr.
Twin HS4's on a maniflow inlet
Rob walker stage 3 head with 35.7mm and 31mm valves
Aldon yellow distributor
balanced, cross drilled crank
lightened flywheel
3.44 diff

The car will be used for B road blasts and the occasional long trip up north. I would like a cam that is fairly tractable with really good mid and top range power with decent torque, I don't mind a slightly lumpy idle either. I just want an engine that puts a smile on my face but doesn't give me a headache when driving.

The Sw5 seems a bit tame for what I want and the kent 286 too wild. I've been considering the AC Dodd RS+, Newman Phase 2/3, Keith Calver RE13 and kent 276. I did think about the Sw10 too but I don't know too much about it.

Another question is whether to fit a centre main strap too?

Any helpful suggestions would be great.

Richard

Firstly that sounds like a nice spec of Engine. Your going to have great fun with that! :-)

I've posted this before but here is a website giving pretty much all of the cam timings profile etc for the good olde A Series.

I've got a tweaked SW10 in my 7 Port and love it. Basically the SW10 it's a tweaked version of the Kent 286 Cam and more suited to the road. It's a bit Grumpy below 2,800 but rev to this and the whole car comes alive (literally)! I would highly recommend! Go to the Swiftune site to see the graphs of the cam to get an idea of the power / torque curves your likely to get. If you think it's a bit too wild then I'd take a step down and go for the likes of the Kent 276. (Just my personal opinion).

I'm also running 1.5:1 roller tip rockers and would again highly recommend. If you can fit a Miglia style centre main strap then there is no harm in doing so. Belt and braces and all that!

I've gone for the SW5 with 1.5:1 rockers. Apart from that the motor's a similar spec. Why do you think the SW5 will be too tame?

The 276 lies nicely between the two above mentioned cams

Cheers orange phantom! I'm really tempted by the SW10. I just thought it might be a bit of a handful with that cam. The SW5 is a good cam Govig I just want something a bit more more exciting. I don't mind having a cam thats grumpy at low revs as my old 911 didn't have much go until 4000rpm.

mines mg metro with stage 3 head, full maniflow, med stub stack
balanced engine just the mg metro cam, its great for B roads and lanes
and dont have to rev past 5000 so will last and a 3.4 diff

feels like a tamer race car and but driveable

I'm not saying it's not a handful.... I'm getting over 150 bhp out of my motor at around 7,000 rpm! It's okay for cruising below 2,800 but don't expect to be able to floor it in that range and get a huge amount of power from it. Saying that it still great for taking it easy but when you want the power drop it down a cog and then things can get a bit hectic if you want it to!

From what your saying the Kent 276 maybe the best compromise.

Why not give Swiftune and Kent a ring to get some advice/more info from them.

Ah,

Maybe something like the Newman Phase 3, RS+ or 276 will do the trick. does anyone have any experience of these? I've read lots about peoples experiences of the 276 (good and bad) but not much of the other two.

Have you consideredthe Piper BP270? I have just sorted one after ringing around and talking to all the main players. Similar to a Kent 276 but torque curve looks better lower down so should make a good fast road cam. They do regrinds as well so keeps the cost down.
