do you reckon the bores would be knackered...... as i haven't the knoledge to strip the rest of the engine down.

I like the proper sorting of the bits, with the little torn off teeth in a neat pile next to the gear. It's almost as if you took it apart and plan on putting it back together
How'd it happen?

Clean it up, laquer it, mount it on a plinth, and use it as a reminder (or paperweight!)

Oh eckers
I would advise a rebuild if only to satisfy yourself that the engine is fine. There will have been metal particles in the oil, the oil then gets splashed onto the bores, the metal particles then embed in the piston skirt, then the bores wear, then it deffinately is a rebuild

thanks minimole
the smashed gear is from a 1275 i got... but i have another gearbox goin on it anyway.... and a spare gear as well.
my only prob is??? the bores does anyone think they will be bad

What I was getting at is, they may be fine now, but if you ignore the fact that metal particles have been in the oil and may have embedded them selves in the pistons, the bores WILL wear the more you use it.
Its a chance you could take, may be fine but then you have the engine off the box to change it it would be foolish not to at least pull it apart and clean the internal passages and components

I got one off them too... from some one I know who built an engine with an A series idler and an A+ transfer case...
The bits generally come off in big chunks, but would suggest stripping the engine just to be sure, but it's unlikely to have knackered then block.. the gearbox may be a different matter...

agree with mini sprockett.
I know its not a car, but I had a show stopping, fully tuned 70cc 2 stroke scooter once upon a time. And the piston seized. I took it to a workshop for a new piston & Barrel. They fitted it, and a month later, it seized again. Turns out they didnt pull the crank apart to remove the broken bits of piston ring which droped into the bottom of the enigne.
Really is a must dude.

As said above "Stripping the engine" would be a good idea. When chunks fly off the idler, the first place they end up is the box, large bits are taken out by the strainer, smaller bits may get through into the oil ways, but by the time it's got through the filter, no different to any-other grot...
The worst which may have happen is bits getting flicked round the gearbox and up into the pistons, and crank journals, which may cause physical damage to the components, but the bearings etc will fairly well protected.
