Another little challenge that i have just encountered is the smell of fuel in the car once i have filled up the tank. This is not an issue when the fuel gauge is at half or below so i suspected the fuel sender seal. However, there does not appear to be any leakage that I can see anywhere so the question is what level of fuel would the gauge show once the fuel level in the tank got just below the sender hole? Or any more suggestions that could cause the issue?
(Just for the complete picture i also have another rear end problem "Clanking Noise From The Back" but don't presume the two are linked as they started at different times)
Many thanks.

You would be looking at just over 1/4 of a tank at the sender point.
As for the smell have you checked the tank for a leak other than the sender?
You may find the clanking noise is coming from the tank? Is the brace tight?
This might also link with the smell of fuel as the tank may rub on the inside of the boot, ad has caused a leak from this.
Where is the clanking sound comng from?

hi if the tank is not a later flap in neck type you can look in tank with a torch to see if fuel is low enough to take out sender

hmmm, if it is a 1/4 then that could blow my theory on the sender rubber as it isn't a problem with the gauge showing half full. I cannot see or feel any leakage anywhere, unless of course it is on the bodywork side.
The tank strap seemed tight as when i tried to move the tank the whole car moved, although i did manage to do it up a bit more.
As for where the clanking sound is coming from all i can say is the back, suggestions on the other thread are to look at the shock bushes so if i take out the tank to look at that then i might as well change that as well. Is taking out a tank a difficult task?
I will also look through the filler hole and see what i can see (never thought of the obvious!!).

UPDATE - Just been out to check and the fuel level in the tank cuts straight across the middle of the hole and the gauge is spot on half full.

+1 for it being a blocked or restricted tank breather

Thanks guys. Had a look at what i believe to be the breather pipe, which starts at the top of the tank near the filler. It then goes down the tank towards the front of the car where it ends inside the boot near the outlet pipe. Should it just stop there or should it not continue outside the boot?

I have always seen the tube pass through a grommet in the boot floor so the fumes are directed outside the car.
