how-do all,

i recently bought a modified engine from a rally cross car that won NORTH CORNWALL & NORTH DEVON THE LAST YEAR IT WAS USED! :D

the guy i bought it off said "alot still remember 126 jon broom with that mini" (this engine) whoever 126 Jon broom is lol

anyway, i was talking to him about it and he said it has the following:
  • 11 stud polished and ported head
  • vernier timing
  • none standard cam (will find out what it is once stripped)
  • bored out but can't remember if its 1330 or 1310
  • close ratio gears
  • welded diff
  • "long stoke"
  • fully balanced

and some other stuff I can't remember off the top of my head.

so my question are:
  • how can i measure if it 1330 or 1310 ect?
  • how can i check its a long stroke engine? measure distance to BDC?
  • how much is the welded diff worth?
  • who is "126 jon broom" :shy:

any advice will be gradely appreciated :proud:.

and i just like to take this opportunity to say... bye bye 998cc :D

get that engine apart i bet youll have a standard worn out engine.

Sorry to sound pessimistic. But a welder diff in a fwd car. errrr? Sounds like the seller is full of **** and making up terms.

the guy selling sounds very genuine and has a large wealth of knowledge, he also has a ruck of classic mini performance parts and memorabilia from his rally crossing. and by the vast majority of pictures he has sent me it looks the part.

my dads going down to pick it up tomorrow. :D

A welded diff is the poor mans LSD, basically it's a standard diff which someone has welded up, usually a bit agricultural... worth... absolutely F all

To check the bore, take the head off and the piston should be marked +020, +030 etc... which will give you the bore size and measuring the stroke is fairly simple as it's the distance the piston travels up and down the bore.

Honestly, I would imagine that any competition engine which has seen 'action' will be fairly worn, especially as it seems they are at their best ( loosest ) just before they go bang.

A welded diff is a cheapo grasstrack trick instead of using a LSD.....they come up on ebay brad so i guess there is your best bet to value it.

As for the bore size.....have a look at the pistons...they will have a + number on them...this number will tell you what size they are...or measure the bore size. If you don't want to crack the engine open at this stage, get a bore scope and have a look inside the plug hole

cheers guy's,

sorry i didn't state earlier, am going to do a rebuild on the engine anyway :proud:.

i know how to measure the the stroke but i could do with the measurements of a standard one and compare it.

damn, want to buy a welded diff? ;D

And another thing would be (due to negative comments....not me tho!) was it cheap? if so then no prob's if its a wee bit worn, and t=it can always be bored out a little more seeing as it ain't a 1380.

Ha ha....anything is gonna be a shock after a 998!!!!!! Do you want me to measure the stroke of my 'spare' engine? So i take it the twin 1.5's are off the market now!!!

Why not take it to pieces then come back on here. After taking the head off and before removing the crank just measure the stroke. Then with the piston size known the capacity will be known.

Ok Brad.....payment for this info is a set a twin 1.5 su's with manifold

The stroke on my 1293 is 3 1/4" or 83mm in euro's (approx)....that is measured from piston at its lowest point to block top. Done with a tape measure so not 100% accurate but will give you a ball park to work from.

My 1 3/4" HIF SU will go lovely on your new engine ;D ;D ;D ;D swap yer (+cash)
