Hi there guys,

I was really pleased to have passed my test in my standard MPI. However, two months later and I still can't find reasonable insurance. This seems bewildering to me, as I am in a Low-Risk postcode, the car is totally standard, albeit a 1.3i (Non-Cooper), and I have just turned 18. I have looked at pretty much every way to save money on this, and the lowest quotes I have found are still in the £3000 region. In all of my quote searches I have maxed out the voluntary excess, limited the mileage to around 2000 pa and tried both TPFT and Fully Comp. I only really need the car for school holidays, so I have looked at temporary cover but the insurers just aren't interested. Surely there is something I have missed here? Anybody got any tips? I imagine some of you will just tell me to bite the bullet and pay up, but 3 grand for a holiday runaround seems silly money...

You should try aviva :-) and phone them up to. They quoted me £1400 on an MPI whilst everybody else wouldn't quote me lower than £2000. Any other car and I dont really have a look in, my Metro is £3000+ to insure with anybody. :(

Have you added your parents as secondary drivers? (This is perfectly legal as long as you're the main driver and registered owner)

When I did that it took my insurance down by around £800!

I'm sure it will be the same with you :-)

An Austin metro 998 is more expensive to insure than my 998 mini :(

I really want to get another car so I can give the mini the attention it needs but I cant insure anything else :(

Rule 1. Don't rely on comparison websites, you're much better off contacting insurance brokers directly...

Also there's nothing stopping you from just taking out insurance for the months you use it, when you're done, cancel the insurance policy, cash in the tax disk and sorn the car...

Adding named drivers onto the policy is a know way of reducing the premium.

Hi guys,
Thankyou so much for all the advice!
I tried aviva online and got a silly quote but you are right, a phonecall might be a good idea! I'll definitely keep my parents on the policy: I could actually just be a named driver as strictly speaking I am probably not the principle driver as they occasionally use it while I am away, not sure if that system would give me a NCB though...

I remember once when i was 20 i had a seat ibiza cupra 1.8 turbo, I was getting ridiculous quotes as you can imagine. I added my Grandad on as a second driver 50+ years driving history and it dropped the price by £2000!! I normally use comparison websites then phone up the cheapest one directly.

Follow up to this, ended up going for direct line as part of a family policy with two other cars. £1500 pa. Highly recommended.

That was a while ago now.

But now a 998 mini is more expensive, with normal insurance, to insure than my 114 GTA

^^ re above the differences with capacity are surprisingly marginal. Even a year's driving experience post test seems to hugely affect premiums. Also Mini's aren't the insurance bargain they once were: for comparison here are some quotes from gocompare (age 19 with a year and a half's experience).

Fiat Seicento Schumacher £728 Fully comp.

BMW 316i (E30) Convertible £1300 "

Range Rover Classic Vogue SE 3.9 Auto £1408 TPFT

Not sure what I've done wrong here, but just getting some quotes for my 17 year old who takes his test in May, and on a fully comp 10,000 smiles per year policy with breakdown cover, me as a named driver, I get:

Adrian Flux (current insurer) £2,225 (and that's third party)

Go Compare £1,600

MoneySupermarket £320

And the prices will change very quickly as well. Went through all of this with my lad and within a week on the same model of car it would go up by £200.

He ended up paying £2k to buy a Corsa 1ltr and paid £2k to insure it as a new driver. One years NCB made a hell of difference though.
