Hiya Guys

Ok brought a Mini Cooper S JCW 2003 yesterday, it had a flat battery a week or so ago and it hasn't been driven for about three months the owners been away in the US

So, Orange Engine sign is on

Guy I got it from said it had come on yesterday when he took it for a spin, its only just had an MOT so all levels etc checked at time by his BMW Mechanic

He said his mechanic thinks its because it hasn't been used for a while and is a fuel sensor or CO2 sensor that needs replacing and the car needs hooking up to the diagnostic tool and the light reset???

It drove fine.... until I got on the motorway... 65mph and it started to cough and splutter, fine at lower speeds unless an inline up or trying to overtake someone then it happened as well

I also noticed that the expansion tank had some small traces of brown coolant around rim, and I couldn't see the level it was at through the bottle!

Me and the better half stopped about 5 mins up the road from where we got the car for a sandwich, and I waited until cool then took off the cap of the expansion tank

Had a funny smell, not a good smell... hard to describe it but not normal

Very very dark brown, hot type of smell.... I am only hoping the head gasket hasn't gone, although the oil checked out ok light colour it was serviced a week before I got it at the same time as the MOT and it had covered 300 miles from then til now, so I would have thought if it had been the head gasket the oil would be affected?? Maybe not im not sure, but it is a worry!!!

Any ideas guys please?? Im really hoping its an easy fix as the car itself is near mint!

Cheers

With the engine light on, it's probably running in feed-forward mode, thus the limited / poor performance at higher speeds.

"Guy I got it from said it had come on yesterday... "
"He said his mechanic thinks its because.. "

I've heard that 1000s of times before. A check of the obd should give a more believable cause though repairing it is another story.
