Hey guys/gals

I am trying to figure out the best way to go about fixing some panels. The "fresh air" vent panels are almost completely rusted out. There was one screw holding the passenger vent on and two holding the drivers vent on. I would like to fix the panel and re-install the vents. Here are some pics of the passenger side...




I was thinking about fiberglassing the panels.

The best way is to cut it out and weld in new. Have as look at my project page 16 and 17. I would not fiberglass it would look a mess and wont stop it from rusting.

Damn I figured you were going to say that. Now I have to find someone that will let me borrow their tools to do this.

I think you may have bigger issues than just the flitch corrosion you can see there. What do the A panells look like and also the scuttle closeouts as well??

That rust has travelled up as far as the scuttle closeouts and probably further as well. This will then creat more problems. If it was more localised then you could have done this



But yours is a lot bigger and seems to be travelling forward. More investigation needed i think.

And, it is structural so fibreglass is not acceptable, and an automatic MOT failure. It looks to me in one of the pictures that there may already be an inadequately welded patch lower down, the bit with black underseal on it (useless stuff, by the way) and a few blobby tack welds along the top. If so, that is downright dangerous, and you need a complete flitch repair panel, or maybe even a full inner wing. Partial panel repairs must be fully seam welded, either butt or lap weld is ok, but it must be full and continuous.
