I am doing the same at the moment with the Midas. I gave everything a good clean with degreaser, then used a wire brush on the angle grinder to get it cleaned up & keyed ready for paint.

I used Hammerite.

Or scrub it with petrol, just be careful of sources of ignition, lol.

for the subframe definatly get it stripped completly and sand blast it! noting can get right into the cracks and corners and completly remove the rust!! and you get such a nice finish! like new! and it will not cost a huge amount. cost me 30 quid for 2 subbys.

you can get rust treatment stuff from hamerite, you mix it with water then put the part into the water over night and it will remove the rust, then just a case of priming the part and painting it,

It's not as effective as getting rid of the rust completely! Use that stuff and rust will return! But I'm not bothered, not my rusty subframe...

I wasn't very impressed with it...

The POR15 Metal Prepare is amazing - most of my car went through a bath of it... It not only removes rust but also old paint and stuff... leaves an excellent surface for painting...

oh right, i only ever used the hamerite one once after i brought it by mistake instead of the instant rust remover stuff, it seemed okay when i used it but then again i did scrub it with a tooth brush a few times in that 24 hours and your right the paint didnt totally come off and i had to scotch it all up b4 paint

I agree shotblast works best, i used to work at a steel place so got my front and back subframes shotblasted, worked a treat. To protect bolt holes i used some old bolts. I did the smae when i got the frames powder coated too.
