Hi, when driving along with windows down there is a strong smell of oil/ fumes in th car, with the window closed theres no smell at all. Could this be the engine breather being clogged. I know its definitly not an exhaust leak have thourghly sealed, checked, sealed and checked again! Is there a particular way of getting the breather off to clean it out? On my engine its attached to the back of the block as opposed to the timing cover which ive seen on some engines. Its a standard pre a plus 998 in a 1979 mini. the breather pipe is still connected and is brand new so not damaged in any way.

i took mine off recently and had some creamy stuff in there

washed it out in petrol, that was the clutch end breather

i take it your engine is in good nick or is it worn out

Engine seems ok, has a few oil leaks in usual places. Recently did head head gasket and cylinders and pistons very good. head being refurbed next week for unleaded. Done nearly 90 k and still going up rapidly. Always starts what ever the weather. Want to look after it as well I as can because can't afford it to be off the road. Would be nice though to have window down without choking!

Oil leaking on to the exhaust maybe? You could check the breather function by stretching some plastic (clingfilm) over the oil filler neck . If you want to remove the breather it's only held on by 1 bolt in the middle of the tappet cover.
