Hi all

driving through the monsoon today I felt my foot getting wet. The first problem is how do I stop the water leaking in through the drivers and passengers air vents or is it just something normal?

The second question is at the drivers side footwell there is a circular hole big enough to get a hand into. Its a machined hole as I can feel it smooth so seems it should be there. its near the accelerator pedal on the inner wing. Is it supposed to be open or is something supposed to plug into it?

Thanks

I suspect if you strip it all back there will be a large hole around the fresh air vent.

This is a common place for minis to rot

as above it won't be the vent but the rusty hole around it

The hole in the driver's side footwell is for the air pipe to the heater, if I understand you correctly. Do you have a heater unit installed? The hole goes into the wheel well then into a periscope shape plastic piece to the pipe/duct which goes into the engine bay.
You can see the engine bay black piece in the bottom left corner (random google image) The duct follows the blue line into wheel well, then into the driver's side

Its possible that the seal has disintegrated under the fresh air vent mounting ring but more than likely it will be rust. There should be a black concertina type duct that connects to the hole by the throttle pedal that then fits into the r/h side of the heater. Its more than likely come off

It can be a pig to fit as well.

Thanks all. The car was fully restored this year so not rust, i'll get photos tomorrow. The rain coming in could be expected due to the monsoon weather on the m4 this evening its not coming in when stationary . The heater is the internal type, it works very nicely too. The hole I am on about is at foot level near the accelerator, it isn't rust its certainly a designed hole as it is smooth and continuous dimension.

here is the hole I am on about, I put my hand through it certainly has something behind it but nothing on the passenger cabin side. Should there be something here inside the car and if so what? :D

looks like it is what you mean ferrit, but should it then connect to something internally?

As already mentioned this is the air intake to the heater. There should be a concertina type ducting that attaches to the other side of the hole and to the r/h side of the heater.

Also if you have water coming in via the fresh air vent then there is an issue with either the seal or its also the ducting has disconnected from there as well.

The duct in this picture is the one that fits to it internally.

Sonikk4 is right, In the wheel area there should be a L shape piece to connect to another black concertina pipe that goes above the shock absorber mounting, then into the engine bay.

But if you heater works happily, I guess you could just blank it off. It's nice down here in summer as I usually drive barefoot and it's a nice foot-air-con, but in winter is a cold draft.

Sonikk4 - where would the heater get it's intake air from if he doesn't have this duct? From another duct on the left? Or would it just draw from inside the cabin?

I'll see if I can get some duct to go into it but the heater works as is and its more pipe work to go wrong I suppose! I'll also remove the dash and take a look at the airvents, its the first time it happend and last night was an exceptional amount of water

thanks for the help!

You do not need to take the dash off. The vent you need to get to is on the underside of the lower dash rail. I removed a seat to get more comfortable in removing the heater and ducts but then i am not a small unit. It is fiddly to do but again no need to take the dash apart.
