OK so a friend is thinking of selling his mini, a 1974 morris mini 998cc and for some reason the insurance is stupendous.

I got several quotes for various models of 1275 and they were all 213 give or take a couple of quid

i did the same with various 998 models (including an identical car by engine size and year) and they all came out at 189 quid (give or take)

so you would think my mates mini would be the same, or inbetween the two right? WRONG.

Just for that 1 particular car, and only that 1, i was quoted 1723 pound, you didn't miss read that, it was 1723 quid. what the hell!!!

checked the history and its straight, no insurance CAT's, no write offs, not stolen recovered etc, its a clean straight car, they just don't want me to buy it lol.

anyone else had a similar experience??

and that was the cheapest quote from compare sites and indervidual brokers and classic insurance suppliers.
Local broker said it was just a 1 in a million combo of person and car that was stupedous. i refuse to belive this.

nope, nothing. i was trying loads of different cars to see if it was just me and they'll insure me on a toyota supra twin turbo for 900 but won't insure me on that particular mini for less than 1700 lmfao.

My current 1275 cost me 400 on a full policy with unlimited miles and every optional extra added, 133 pound if i have it on classic insurance with restricted mileage. I tried a couple of random 1275's and 998's off ebay and they all came out between 189 - 400 MAX on full policys.

Its confused the hell out of me, why just that one particular car, the current owner pays 201 pound for it on his policy

Then get a sensible quote from somewhere else instead.

For whatever reason they clearly don't want to insure you, so it's their loss.

Businesses can't stay afloat without customers so they should be doing all they can to keep you interested.

I have, that's the point, I've tried several comparison sites, loads of indervidual companies including classic car brokers, they're all the same but only for that 1 particular car. I've got a few other minis to look at anyway but its just easier to buy his. Ah well I'll just have to pick another. Might buy a Capri as a winter challenge whilst the minis hibernating lol

I reckon that some particular models of car just have an unlucky bad history on the overall insurance database, probably just down to statistics.

My friend has an '88 Red Hot and couldn't afford the insurance last year because it was so high. At first I put it down to where he lived, how it was kept overnight, etc. but he got a quote for my car ('92 City) and it was half the price. Out of curiosity I then got a quote for his car with the exact same details as I've used for my own car (keeping it my own house, same named drivers, etc), and surprisingly it was more than twice the price to get insured on his (quotes for both cars completely standard, same mileage limit, same everything). The only thing I can think of is that my friends car is deemed statistically higher risk than mine, something on their database like 10 '88 Red Hots have been stolen in our town, but only 5 '92 Citys. I must add I don't know exactly how the system works, but that's my best guess...

So in your case, there could be something on the database about loads of 1974 Morris Minis being stolen in your exact area. I reckon it is just a one in a million chance of bad luck to be honest >_< Have you tried doing the quote with a different address or something? Try changing different things until the quote goes down, narrow it down to whatever's making it high.

I'd refuse to believe it as well because it's nonsense. Keep shopping around and focus on the insurers where you can actually speak to a human being.

well i spoke to them and it comes up the same?? when they did a quote for the same car but without the registration (1969 morris mini 1000 and a 1974 austin mini 998) both quotes came back at 144 pound and a few pence. i did a search with the car checker app and paid for the full report and it came back as clean as a whistle, no accidents, not stolen recovered, no engine changes or anything untowards, no claims or alterations to the car whatsoever.
It turns out the cars registration documents (and DVLA data base) has it as a 1974 morris mini 1000 and the insurance company's system only recognises morris mini 1000's up until 1969 so its flagging up all the time as suspitious.

looks like i'm just gonna have to get a different one. can't win em all i suppose

Their system is flagging it up as suspitious because on their system it should be a 1974 Austin mini but the registration comes up as a Morris mini and on their system there is no such thing. Pre 69 is Morris, post 69 is austin/rover. Can no longer be bothered to argue with em lol

I can't, the registration flags up as a Morris because that's what's on the documents and dvla data base, I tried getting them to over rule the system but it flags straight back up. I thought about getting a 74 austin shell etc but then it knackers the full t&t and the cost and effort would make it dearer than just picking a cheap mini up off ebay
