Help! I've done almost every thing on my engine and it's nearly ready to go back in but the sump has a graze in it so it's just going to leak oil , can I get it welded or should I get a new gear box casing the engine is a 998 a+ from a rover racing green 1990 , should this fit the gears? http://item.mobilewe...nid=24971211817 hopefully I should just be able to swap the casing? Do you think they wil match and what's the best way to go about this problem thanks harry

Is it leaking, is there a definate crack or is it just a graze. I've seen gearboxes with huge lumps out of the fins, but still they didn't leak.
Can you please post a photo showing where you expect to oil to come leaking out?

You'll need to find a good welder who can weld aluminium. If you call at Booker Airfield and find the maintenance company and they will almost certainly know a CAA Approved aluminium welder. I had a big hole in the bottom of a gearbox and found an aircraft welder who did a fantastic job in about 20 minutes and I paid him £20 in cash.

Gearboxes are a bit of a bugger to weld as the oil seeps into the pores. Still, a repair of that kind would only need to be oil tight not as strong as new
