Running In New Engine ..but

ok i have a small worry . my car has no mot and not been setup correctly with fueling . how bad would it be to run with incorect carb setup . i have set it up to start ok and it runs fine but not taken it out on road because of lack of mot.might need some night time runs on back roads just ot get some miles in.whats the chance of it passing mot without the new engine being run in .. and i was looking at this idea for running in .. because it will take me months to do 1000 miles plus...

Take it for an MOT, if it fails on emissions then they may be able to adjust the carb for you.

You could speak to the tester before hand and explain the situation.

If you get caught driving on back roads with no MOT you may have the car siezed, not ideal.

Also, the carb needs to be correct when running in, too lean and it can overheat etc, too rich and it can cause other problems.

See if you can find a mini friendly garage and MOT station near you.

First up do not run the car with the fueling not set up correctly, overfueling can cause bore wash and the rings will never bed in right. Get the fueling set up first.
The next thing is try not to run the engine with no load, idleing a rebilt engine and reving it without being under load is also not good for a rebuilt engine.
Once the fueling is set up you should get it on the road and under load asap using between 2000 - 4000 rpm for 500 miles, oil change, oil filter change and reset the tappet clearances and off you go again increasing the revs as you gain confidence in the engine without screaming the hell out of it.

Engine was setup with same head ,same rockers , still the same bore 1380...just new block new crank , pistons , rings ,,and cam .. Biggest change is the cam from 276 to 285 ...So shouldn't be that far out with fuelling .. But I'm going to have to run it to test it..

Can of worms about driving genty or pushing it hard for running in.

As a rule of thumb, you need an oil with poor detergents and loads of ZDDP, like an api SG spec oil, then running in the camshaft for 20 mins revving it a 3000-3500 rpm.
Change the oil ( and do about 60-80 miles in one single trip, just stop every then and now to check for leaks and put an eye at spark plugs colour and carefully listen for pinking noises.

Don't forget to retorque the head bolts when you check the tappets after driving it for few hundred miles

I went through exactly your scenario when running in my new engine. Timing must be correct before setting up the carburettor. My technique explained below was for a very early 850 mini, but I guess the same applies to amny other cars. But it is MY method which worked for me!

The first thing I did was set the static timing, using the light bulb method on the distributor. That was good enough for the road intially, once on the roadside I used the knurled micrometer on the side of the distributor for fine adjustments.

But before i took the car on the road, I set the carburettor to the nominal intial setting as stated in the manual and then used a `Colortune' spark plug in no.1 cylinder. Starting the engine, I then set the rpm to around 2000rpm to bed the cam in.
At the same time, I adjusted the carb to give a blue flame in the Colortune. So with this achieved, the static timing correct, and the cam bed in, it was then `safe' to take on the road to the MOT station.

On route however, I pulled the car over to fine-adjust the timing and carburettor. Spark plug colour should be a grey-brown colour for correct mixture.
Can I just state, this was MY method which worked for me. There may be people who may disagree with my method so its up to you to double check before starting up.
