insulate first
stop drafts etc

we have a tiny gas space heater which we use for small spaces, in our container for example 20ft x 8ft. it is quite good on gas compared to our bigger one.

As a heating engineer i would advise against using this type of heater in such a small area because this type of heater releases the products of combustion into the same area as it does not have a flue. The manufacturer will have enclosed specific instructions as to its safe use,ie in areas with adequate ventilation and a minimum area.
A good electric oil filled or fan type heater would be a much safer option. I use one with a plug-in timer so my garage is warm when i want to work in there and also it switches off if i forget to turn it off. Forget about gas fired heaters!!!!!!!

I just have a second hand indoor portable butane gas heater, it's cheap and cheerful, but does the job and only cost me £10! Plus they're an absolute godsend to have to hand if your central heating ever breaks down in the middle of winter.

You can get indirect space heaters. Look very similar to the one linked to but generally bigger and they have a chimney on the top. That chimney is an exhaust from the combustion chamber so if you stick a suitable pipe on it and take that outside you don't get the combustion by-products inside the garage poisoning you and covering everything metal with condensation.

I've got a Clarke barrel stove because it came very cheap - if it hadn't I would have converted a gas bottle. My garage/workshop is around 40 feet long by 20 feet wide. I'm spoiled but still manage to run out of space.

I used electric convector heaters in my garage one year as my portable gas fire broke. I got a very big shock when the electricity bill came in. Never use one again. Ii now have a portable gas fire and it is very good.

DON'T get electric, for exactly that reason. Very expensive, even the high efficiency ones, with oil or whatever in them..
I'm fortunate I have remote heating, waste heat from the local powerplant. But when I had a broken water pipe, I used electric for a month. Big mistake.
