If you take the bottom plate off, can you select all gears ?

Yeah, although as I had it on ramps, it did seem to creep forward easily as if it was engaging all of the gears

Sorted the problem now. Ended up just fabricating a metal plate up, and now it selects all gears perfectly.
Thank you all for the help and advice!!

Yes, I don't think it is a good idea to drive without a reverse detent, which is the bit on the bottom plate that you have to lift it over. It is there for a very important reason, and if it was preventing you selecting reverse, it is because the lever is out of position with respect to the gearbox, due to a bent or twisted selector rod or steady rod, or maybe an improperly adjusted reverse light switch.

Ahh right, okay. I know I shouldnt but ill see how she goes with this fabricated plate in, then if I have any problems ill put the original one back in then have a look at the selector or steady rod

have you actually tried to select reverse at 60mph... you just can't do it, in fact it's hard enough to do it while the car's rolling forward slightly.

Not only have I tried ( 5 speed mini - oops ) but i believe mythbusters tried it once aswell.

Yes but it make a loverly noize, Just like eating ginger nuts with yer gob open. I am sure that even you know what could happen pulling away vigorously and selecting reverse instead of 2nd? Trust me, it can and will be done.

not knocking your comment Guess-works, as mine was more sarcasm than possibility. Just pointing out why the plate has that "bar" on it.

Edit. I have done it too, but we dont want to tell them that do we? We proffessionals always keep that sort of info safe dont we!

So I should put the original plate back then and look at the selector or steady rod then to see if they are twisting?

See if you can work out why putting the plate on stops it going into reverse, i have seen that tab really badly damaged and preventing correct operation.
