Hi

Just wondered if there was anything else apart from leather treatment in the mean time (until pay day!) I can do to stop my steering wheel coming off in tiny sticky bits when I drive! (I know I could probably get some gloves!! :-| ) I've been told to get a steering wheel cover but honestly I really don't like them!

My hands were much blacker than this, I had just wiped some of it off before the photo, but you get the idea, its only ever happening when it is cold and damp out, she has been in the garage for a few days while I've been working on her, which could mean she was abit damper than usual?? But when its dry, and before it started to get colder she didn't do this at all....

Anyone had this happen? Any ideas?

I ... I don't think thats lether, its more BMCs attempt at something like leather.

Anyway, I had a steering wheel in the garage, kept getting cover in weird nasty rubbish just from sitting. So I suggest getting a bit brutal with the cleaning, I used tuffie 5 wipes (which go through pretty much anything my car can throw at them) and ran them around a few times till all the gunk was off.

Or just buy a new wheel.

Its the sun melting the plastic not leather, Your best bet is too buy a new steering wheel.

Or send that one off to be covered in leather/vinyl. Leather covering for a wheel is usually around the £200 mark.

Unfortunately the designer's had a different steering wheel to the rest of the cars of that era...

If I we're you I'd go onto ebay and get myself a cheap Mounty Leather wheel with a boss. Probably around the £50 mark used.

haha, totally snazzy clingfilm! :D

Yeah I wasn't too sure if it was leather or not! yeah I'm thinking now that giving it a good deep clean might be the answer!

Considering getting it recovered might be a good idea, really want to avoid getting a new wheel if possible, as the designer has the flower in the centre, wouldn't want to lose that! Do you know what they have done differently on the designers?

Just checked eBay and the steering wheels are really good but I just want to keep her as original as possible! so even if I could get something to keep the centre it wouldn't look right on the car! (well to me anyway  )

I know what you mean, what you could do is get a after market one, and get a resin sticker made for the centre with the designer Logo.

Could this problem be due to some kind of fungal attack? Maybe something relatively harmless to humans such as athlete's foot powder would kill it? I have seen fungal problems in cars before, and real or imitation leather can both suffer, in different ways.

I really have no idea, I've got all the press release documents and some promotional bits and bobs for it and it says that it is a leather steering wheel! My bf has just taken her out for a drive and he said the steering wheel was fine, he reckons I must have hand cream on that's reacted with it! Hmm... I've not used any though... Haha!!

I'll get on and give it a good clean... See what happens... :)
