i saw a set of 1275 GT con rods on the old ebay and said would fit any 1275 apart from a cooper s crank. whats are the differences and how many types of conrods are there?

the cooper S rods and cranks had thinner big ends. the big ends were made thicker due to the inferior metal used in the std 1275 crank and rods.

for the std 1275 engine there was (in order of best to worst in std form. lightness, balence, strength etc) the 1275GT rod, the A+ rod and the innocenti 1275 rod. dont use a 1275GT rod in a good, high HP engine unless highly modded. but then you may as well start with the A+ rods.

they have huge weights built on to them to build in smoother running due to the intertia making the engine turn smoother. like having a heavier flywheel. they also have small additions either side of the little ends. pointless for a road sport / race engine! also, when they are modified they need shot peening or some form of hardening due to removing the exterior tension.

using A+ rods they dont have this, and are and have been used in quick engines with no modifications with some sucess. they fetch oretty much the same price, the 1275GT rods are probably dearer due to the 1275GT part!!!!

The Cooper 'S' rods are for a 1.625" big end crank journal. All the other 1275 engines have a 1.75" big-end journal.
The 1275GT rods are very poor for higher performance engines (this also applies to the Austin, Morris and MG 1300 rods).
The A+ or the Innocenti Mini-Cooper 1300 rods are excellent.
The 1275GT rods can be machined and re-balanced by someone who knows what he is doing, but it's an expensive thing to do.

do you think £40 + £9p&p is a good price for A+ con rods and pistons
