Hi guys one of my front brake disc heat shields is rattling due to one of its securing brackets broken, my question is are they really neasasary, can I get away with just removing them both. Would it be an m.o.t. Failure... Most minis I've seen have removed them ...thanks

i usually take them off to be honest, as usually they are pretty cruddy, or as you have found on yours, they end up with broken brackets and would only rattle if left.

More hassle than they are actually worth, get rid, no issues with MOT, just with your sanity

Just be aware on long motorway drives in wet conditions if you have not used the brakes much, on the first application they may not 'bite' quite as expected due to water spray on the discs. Has happened to me a couple of times.

That can happen with virtually any car. Most modern cars don't have brake inner shields.
I once got a small stone behind a shield on my wife's classic old Merc 450SL. I thought a wheel bearing was breaking up!

3 options, weld the bracket back on (don't need to remove from the car to do so), replace it, but that would mea pulling the disk and flsnge off as well. Or the last option is to remove both and just not bother with them.

Although it could fail an mot if left with it rattling around.
