Hi all,

I would like to mount a Mk1 steering wheel in my 84Mayfair.
Will it drop straight on or are there other things to consider?
I realise that the stock behind maybe different with two sticks indicator and washers, but do these have any affect on the early wheel?
On other makes of car i have tinkered with, there is often a notch on reverse of the wheel that counters out the indicator, htis may need some attention.

Is the diameter of the steering column/clamping device etc. the same?

If it is possible,...firstly I need a wheel, any out there in good condition? Ideally with a centre boss with all necessary fittings.
I have seen this one on ebay and like this variation. I might have a punt, but would prefer a complete example. see pic attached...

thanks, Jim

I've had a early Morris minor one in my 88 and a 81 with no problems so i think yours should be the same :)

Yep, I have a Mk1 wheel on my MK4. The only thing to think about is that there is a small gap between the cowl and the wheel. Its pretty small but visible from the side.

The early Mk1 'bus style' steering wheel was still fitted on basic models when the twin stalk Mk4 column first appeared in 1976........so yes it fits no problem. From 1977 even the basic 850 got a smaller more modern steering wheel.

They will fit mini's right up to the spi '95', mpi have a different spline pattern. The only issue you may get is the self cancelling indicators. This can be rectified the same way mountney and simular do with a roll pin in the hub.
The column shroud can slide up or down the column to meet the back of the steering wheel.
