hi, have been noticing a slight whiff of petrol when approaching the mini. had a look today and at seems that there is a slight leak coming from a small springy type hose at the bottom of the carb conecting to the float next to it. it has had quite bad fuel consumption aswell, would it be a case of replacing that hose?

any help would be much appreciated, thanks harry

That is the main jet/needle ( i think that is what its called. I had to replace mine on my mini many years ago for the same thing. It turned out that my engine stabiliser rubbers were knackered and it was hitting the bulkead and it fractured. its not an expensive part. You dont want a leak as its very close to the exhaust manifold........

As above, the spring covered tube is part of the jet assembly. I have not seen this tubing for sale separately. However, the tubing itself is often not the cause of the fuel leak.

There is a square-profile rubber seal that joins this tube to the bottom of the float bowl. If the tubing is pulled "out" of that seal or if the seal perishes from age a fuel leak develops. The seals should be available from local parts suppliers and I believe the same seal is used on both HS2 and HS4 carbs.

If you cannot find the seal there is a work around. Do NOT use o-rings, they do not seat properly. Buy a short length of low pressure 3/16" (5mm) inside diameter fuel hose. Use a razor blade to cut off a 1/8" (3mm) thick washer. Keep the sides parallel. Use the razor blade to carefully cut through the outer jacket of the disk you made. Cut just through to the cloth braid between hose layers. Peel off the outer jacket and the cloth braid and you have a new fuel resistant washer for the bottom of the float bowl.

Remove the nut holding the tube to the bottom of the float bowl and pull the tubing out along with the small flat metal washer. Use a paperclip to make sure you remove the old rubber seal from the base of the float bowl. Put the metal washer on the tube, followed by the rubber washer, then fit the tube and washers to the bottom of the float bowl. Tighten the nut to compress the rubber seal, then start your engine and watch the car at idle to make sure the leak is gone.

Seal is part no AUD2194 available from Burlen Fuel Services (tel 01722 412500)

If you make up your own seal I would treat this as a temporary repair.

I have a doubt, Is that spare to install outside, next to the fuel cap?

I don't understand your question. Would you reprhase it please?

You posted a link to an HS carb float bowl lid assembly which is not a cap, nor spare.
