EDIT: Problem tentatively solved. It looks like a stuck brake piston and worn ball joints.

Removed brake pads, the rattle/knock sound was gone. Hopefully it'l still be rattle free when under road/load conditions

I'm leaning towards a "no". But need validation lol.

Question is, is this a diff/gearbox issue? (I'm thinking, hoping, this is more a ball-joint/bushing issue)

Car on jack stands, engine on, 1st gear engaged.
When holding the left side wheel = right side makes a crunch/clunk/grinding sound.
Holding rights side wheel, left side wheel spinning = no abnormal noise.
Both wheels spinning = crunch/clunk/grinding sound
(right side wheel was pulsing when held with hands to stop spinning, not sure with left side wheel, it was held using an old tire to stop spinning)
**noise is louder in 1st gear vs 4th gear**

Engine off, neutral. Either wheel spins freely without any abnormal noise.

Car was bought in not running condition (engine did start, so bought it.). Mini probably hasn't been driven in quite a few years. Can't testdrive, no tires.

If there's a noise you should be able to detect where it's coming from, and the likely cause of the problem.

But personally I think you diff pins on the way out.

It sounds like it's coming from the tranny/diff. But the one sided noise part is questionable.

Wouldn't a bad diff pin be noisy with either wheel? This is only noisy on when the right side wheel is spinning.

What does a bad diff pin sound like? Mines like rrrrkkkk trrrakk rrrkkk ttttkkkk ttkkk rrrkk (gona take a vid on Monday).

Check the pot joints aren't starting to come out and not engaging with the output splines correctly......

Thanks for the tip. Gona check it out next week.
