Hi guys can anyone help with the following, I have an 87 Mayfair and recently I lost all my rear lights. Standard reason being corroded fuse box which when I took off confirmed my suspicions. I decided to clean it up and they worked fine but thought I might as well order a new one as it was clearly on its way out. My new Lucas part arrived so I decided to fit it, took a photo of all the connections, well all that I could get in a photo and then decided to change the box. Once fitted I realised that the head lights and rears all stayed on with no key in ignition. My first thought was a faulty box so put old one bk on but just the same so came to the conclusion I may have a wire wrong, I pinpointed it to a thick red that goes to position 4 as being the power source however in any other position he lights don't work so I'm kinda stumped! Can anyone help as I have to constantly connect disconnect this wire if I want to use my lights!

Sounds like you have mixed up the wires on the fuse box.
The lights do have a permanent live, so can be switched on with out the key in the ignition as standard, but should be able to switch off though. Is that what is happening?

As above the lights are designed to work without the ignition on. Are the lights permanently on regardless of the light switch position of do you mean they work when switched on without the key in the ignition?

They are set to sidelight even in the off position when keys are out or in. They go to full beam and dipped as normal but won't switch off unless I disconnect the perm live wire. I don't understand as I know position 4 on fuse box is lights amongst other things so can't see where else it would go, maybe one of the other wires is wrong?

Update, first dry day in a while but took a look again and tried a new fuse box and made sure all connections corrosion free plus spruced up all earth points. Studied the picture I originally took with great detail and still couldn't work out where the illusive red wire went so did some diagnosis and found out it goes in position 3 bottom contact, to my relief no hefty electronic charges when my mot is dur on Monday! Success, thanks for ur replies
