Wide Steel Wheels

But here goes,
I have just got a E reg Mayfair, its perfect other than a few bits here and there, oh and it minus a front end an a engine...
Replacing the front with a Steel removable front... and fiting a HOT tuned MG lump
Now, I have decided to keep it looking fairly stock... only thing thats noticeable is the Centre exit RC40.
This is where my idea came in, as wide alloys are fairly an UN-stock item, can you get steel wheels widened? atm it has std 12x5? steels, would like something like 12x6 or even 12x7 remember its gotta look fairly stock (at a glance).
I want x6 for the extra 20% grip, so I can really throw the Mini into corners etc.
I do know the rule... Pram wheels for speed, Fat wheels for grip, but neither will give you both!
Or the other idea keep the std steels, just recon'd them, and put a lower profile tyre on, this will reduce the side force a little, so technically, could let me go into corners faster, and maybe sometime bring out the back end or even go into a drift?
But can you get low profiles tyres for 12" wheels...

and yes the yoko A048Rs have a 55 profile which is quite low.

Maybe drift isn't the best word to call a conrolled sidways skid?drift in a front wheel drive car?
Would the Yoko's be ok on std steels?
Do you know of any companies selling any?

The front won't have arches, so to speak, as its a flip front, so won't have inner wings...

I have a set of 13x5.5 wellers in the shed... if I managed to fit a 55 profile tyre... do I need to mod the arches?

I must have answered this question 3 times in the last 3 days now.
Yes, the arches will need to be cut because the wheels will touch them.

For 12" you can use the previously mentioned yokos with 165/55 (which incidentally have ridiculous amounts of grip being semi-slicks).
I'm almost positive you can get 12x6 steel wellers, which would look "fairly" stock. And I see no reason why the 165/55 yoko's wouldn't go on your stock steelies anyway! (after all, std steel wheels are 4.5" wide and I believe some rover minilights had the same width?)
Banded wheels are now illegal indeed, and I'd only buy a set if I knew who made them and how (not just a purchase from ebay saying "these have been professionally widened").

I may go this route... stick them on the steels...
This is unless I can get some Wellers in swap for some 13x5.5 wellers!

You weren't planning on driving it in wet though were you?

I think if you want to go sideways your really looking at driving the wrong type of cars.
I used to find it possible on my steelies because i had 145's on them. It was so different to drive after i changed to 165's.
The rover minilights were only 4.5inch wide (they don't even fill the standard arches) but did take a 165 tyre so steelies should be the same.
Wellers would make the car look modded anyway, and they got a nasty offset, i'd just get some decent wheels or standard steelies. The tyre sizes are usually 165/60 on a 12 although as mentioned the yoko semi race one is a 155.
