Hi,

I took my Mini into the garage a week or so back and they mentioned to me that i dont have a splash shield and water could be getting into my engine. They said to me that it is just esstenialy a sheet of metal that covers/protects the engine.

I have been having some problems with the revs dropping two low when going into neutral and the engine cutting out but only tending to happen when its been raining and wondered if the shield could fix the problem.

Is it worth getting one of these shields? If so does anyone know where is best to get them?

I have a rover mini, 1996 1.3i

Thanks,

The weather shield is plastic and not metal...
Instead of the expensive odd thing you can just bolt an alloy sheet behind the grille to cover the dizzy and the coil, that will keep you safe from rain/splashes etc..

Sounds like a Weather Shield (They stop rain getting to the distributor). I remember when I first took my mini to the car wash, it wouldn't start after because the dizzy was wet! had to wait for a while for it to dry haha, if you're driving and its cutting out its probably because of the water getting to it but the heat of the engine is drying it quickly.

Theres probably cheaper ones about, but thats just an example of what it is mate.

Not sure this is necessary for an MPI, and SPI's im not sure. But dont they both have electronic ignition.

Haven't got a weather shield on my MPI and have never had any issues with rain, even torrential downpours on the motorways.

SPI's still have dizzy's and would have come with a weather shield from the factory

I can confirm that SPis suffer form this problem, stalled on a roundabout off an m1 slip road because of it.
ALWAYS CARRY WD40 IF YOU HAVE A MINI!

alternatively, a marigold rubber glove or a condom over the dizzy works very will indeed!

Minispares do an excellent one, and comes with all the fittings. Despite what The ebay Jonspeed one says you should use the bottom fixing. Or the thing will rattle

You can cut a 2 liter plastic soda bottle in half lengthwise and push it in front of the dizzy, works better than the flat original, it's amazing how much water can get inside the distributor cap during a hard rain.

Spi s have distributor (and side mounted radiator) and were fitted with a splash shield as standard. Mpi s have no distributor and a front mounted radiator and NO splash shield. Hope this helps.

The shield in the ebay link is not the dizzy splash shield, the SPI dizzy shield is only about 4" x 8" plastic, screwed onto the slam panel just behind the grille with 2 small screws, the one in the link is the big engine cover that everyone removed many years ago, it attaches to the rocker cover bolts and covers the top like in the photo, I can't find a photo of the small shield in front of the dizzy.

MPIs do not use splash shields. You could fit one if you feel the loom is having damp problems, would almost certainly require a few chunks cutting out of it to avoid the alternator and radiator.
