Accelerator Cable Sticking At 2000 Revs

Hi all,

1987 - 1275 carb engined mini (mis-mash of engine parts)

HIF38 CARB


Problem:

I had some work done tuning the car and it now runs 100 times better than before.

The accelerator cable will sometimes stick at around 2000 revs when driving above 2000 revs and then letting the engine slow down it will stick.



Now I can see what the problem is which is the outer part of the cable is stiff and physically moves with the inner part and it gets stuck on the guide (carb end),

So my question is should the inner part be able to freely move from the outer part ?

And is the cable fixed in place anywhere to stop it moving ?

Will be buying a new cable in a minute from my local mini shop but any tips fitting it ?
And will it be ok to buy a nylon inner sleeved cable which is an extra 5" long (can be used with webbers so say), will it be too long then ?

Usually the end of the outer cable has a brass fitting that means it fits snugly in the holder at the carb end. (I cant see your pictures as imageshack is blocked at work)

A new cable should have the correct ends fitted. As for the extra lenght, i dont see this being a problem but proably best to check with someone else on here first, or at the shop.

The inner part of the cable should move freely from the outer part. if it doesnt, it could be a sign of the cable rusitng (mine started sticking, i pulled out the inner and it was a deep brown colour :S )
My new cable wasnt as smooth as id like either so i ended up greasing the inner cable and pulling it through the outer, now its super smooth and hopefully the added grease will reduce the corrosion rate.

finally for fitting, ther isnt really an esy way to do it other than taking your time and ensuring you know where the cable is going before you start.
I have herd people say that you can pull the outer off the inner and use the inner cable as a guide for the new outer but thats not always as easy as it sounds, esp when I had the end of my outer cable get stuck in the firewall and had to drill it out.

If you take your time and have enough light then it shouldnt be too difficult to get the cable through the firewall.

Ok bought a cable and fitted it after bending upside down and back to front lol

Its sooooo much smoother now, when i took the old cable out it was rusted to the outer cable solid...

So all fixed :proud: thanks guys !

When issue with the cable is that when the car has been on a while (hour or so) the pedal becomes more stiff,

Should I just take the outer cable off and grease the inner cable and put it back on ?

A bit late with the reply..... (sorry)

reading this topic, I have come to the conclusion that you possibly have "slow" starting issues as well.... the earth cable possibly needs replacing or fixing correctly, as I believe that the new cable is acting as the ground cable which is "arcing" and causing it to stick......

Just a thought :-)
