I have a yellow Aldon with the Aldon Trigger unit and the red is on the + of the coil and the other black wire goes to the - of the coil

Does your race coil have points ? if so the only wire goes to the - coil same as the old minis which just had a 12v feed and the points - wire triggered the coil

Yeah mine has points. Therefore does the distributor get its earth through the engine casing as it only has one wire?

There is only one black wire from my distributor. It's on a 1400 road race spec engine. A friend said the distributor might get its earth through the engine and the wire was positive to the coil but I was not sure.

If there is only a single wire coming from a distributor that indicates that the distributor has points, not electronic ignition. Confirm that by looking inside under the distributor cap. The next thing to look at/answer is what "earth" the car is. From the factory, cars built after the mid/late-1960s were negative earth. You can confirm this by looking at the battery to see which terminal has the cable connected to the boot floor. Assuming you have a points distributor and a negative earth car, the single wire leaving the points distributor should be connected to coil (-). Your friend is correct that the distributor gets its earth connection through the engine block. Remember that once you install the distributor you will need to static time the ignition to get the engine started and of course you will need to put the spark plug wires on in the correct order.

Ahh yes what you say is correct about my car. How do you static time and how do i figure out which ht leads go to which cylinders?

Cheers

Rather than type the details here, please download and read over the PDF document linked below. I wrote the document to explain both how to static time and how to determine which leads go where.

Yes mate the distributor is earthed via the body and the base plate has its own little earth wire to body

BUMP.
This is now a merger of two threads.

You should have all the answers you need for how to connect the Aldon dizzy to the coil, how to static time, and how to figure out the spark plug wire order. Please post back with any remaining questions.

My car still does not start. It only makes a tick noise as the starter is trying to turn the flywheel.

You need to look at the battery voltage and the terminals and battery to body earth cable and check the cable on the starter connection and the earth lead to the engine, I assume the engine will turn over if you rock it? is yours a inertia starter or a pre-engeged? if the latter and all the above checks out ok then have a look at the at the solenoid on top the starter, one small wire is the trigger 12v from the ignition switch the large is the input from the main battery cable and the short large cable is the solenoid to starter all those connections need checking.

Do the basics first I have listed and work you way through it, make sure the engine is free to turn over if its been standing? in 4th gear rock to see crank pulley/fan moving.
