So this is a single pump set up that relies on the fuel to fill via the line from the other tank? ONly pumping from one?

No the main fuel line between the tanks is one huge Tee-piece with the pump in the middle. The pump draws form both simultaneously, there is no separation.

I'm curious why BMC did the twin tanks, was it a weight balance thing? Range for the sportier cars?
Is carrying more fuel a drag?

5.5 gallon fuel tanks don't get you far!

Granted it's not a monster sized tank but then minis hardly plow through petrol either :)

Australian homologation cars of the 60's and 70's had 100+L tanks..
The E49 had a 35 gallon tank

To get more fuel in, that was all. The rally team needed more fuel so it may have been for homologation. The RH tank was an option originally though before it became standard on the Cooper S. In effect it throws the balance out a little because the battery weights more or less the same as a half full 5 1/2 gallon tank.
