Hi Everyone,

As per title, I have to keep this brief or it will disconnect again. My internet has been working for 5 minutes at best and is ridiculously rubbish. The green light shows on the modem (netgear) but still it doesnt work. I've done a full master reset of the entire network and reconfigured the wireless settings and It still doesnt work.

Phoned BT and the line is fine too.

I understand that CHAP failed normally points to an ISP password problem, but I've ensured they're all correct and it's the same one we've been using for 8 years. Any pointers? Anything look wrong with the data below?

Craig,

So you say the internet cuts out?

Who is your internet provider, how old is your router.

I would first check if your provider has a Twitter, bear with me....Talk Talk have a Twitter care line and if you ******* at them then they tend to fix it near immediately. If not give them a ring.

If that doesn't fix it, Pop down to PC world and buy a replacement router and just re-set it up.

Your problems sound to me more like a router issue than a ISP problem :)

Your line stats dont look too out of place. Noise margins are a tad high and this is hurting your speed a little but thats not what were on about here.

I doubt this is a sync issue and thus the line is fine. If you do manage to get a connection for any lenght of time its not an ISP issue either. But I would certainly tap them up for a new router.

But before you do that do me a favour and run a test on the website below.

http://www.speedtester.bt.com/

Id like to know the ip profile speed.

Cheers guys. I'd try and write a full reply but this is the first time I've had connection all day and I reckon it'll be gone in a sec!

We've cancelled with AOL (Who it turns out are now owned by TalkTalk... thanks for telling us!). They've been great for the last 8 years, considering the sheer amount of internet we use in my house and we all had great connections and more than quick enough download speeds, guess it's all gone tits up for them now. We get through to the phone line and it's some foreigner you can barely understand being down right rude and arrogant, they've even hung up a few times! Idiots.

Heres the speeds mate, they're all a bit pathetic.

Download speed: 0.90

Upload speed: 0.29

Ping Latency: 79.88

CHAP is normally some authentication error but could be affected by interference on the line. As a precaution, try unplugging all of your phones, reset everything and see if it springs into life. If possible also run your modem from a master socket rather than extension.

If it doesn't work, I'd be blaming TalkTalk, we had loads of problems when we first switched to them and a daily router reset was usually required. Thankfully they seem to have sorted out our local exchange now and its runs a lot better and is fairly reliable.

Thanks mate. Forgot to mention, on the day same these problems begun, the phone became tempermental too. It hasn't worked at all consistently over the last 3 weeks, but we might get a dial tone every now and then for 5 minutes. The router and phone are both plugged into a master socket, which has had the wire cut back and rewired incase an inquisitive bunny decided to have a nibble :P It seems to be working okay at the moment, about half an hour, but I'm just waiting for t to go off again.

ah well in that case its possible that either your phone is interfering with your broadband or that you have a wiring issue. I would still be inclined to blame talktalk (assuming they do your phone and broadband), but getting them to do much about it can be a problem from my experience.

if you happen to still get your phone through BT, you can do an online check from their reporting page

Craig, if AOL are owned by Talk Talk, tweet them :)

Pipex were bought out by Talk Talk and the same thing happened to us.

they are @TalkTalkCare.

Just tweet something slightly rude and they tend to sort it out fairly quickly, they have so far:

Bumped our speeds from 10mb to 25mb
Replaced our Router, Twice for free.

Though they did phone recently to tell us that one of out computers had a virus and it was slowing their servers, so it may be our fault ;D

I kindly told them to ******* off.

Not quite what i was after matey, want to print screen the page of results on that link i put up?

Looking at that it seems a line issue given the low speeds and high latency.

Looking at the speeds it looks like someone else is downloading. But looking at the latency thats high but not high enough for someone to be downloading.
