I am sure I saw a couple of photos on the web re early mg metro heads being machined like the 1275 gt and then went to the cast look later on?
I have been offered a head which is supposed to be a mg head. If says its a big valve mg a+ spi head. It has 35 inlet and 29 exhaust valves and no by pass but it's machined flat on the top of the head. 9 stud
Any thoughts

it sounds like the correct valve sizes for a leaded mg head but i dont know if they did the flat type, maybe a metro head with bigger valves fitted? i dont know anything about mg spi. my head is a mg unleaded and has the raised parts around thermostat. if no one can help may be try asking on the mg metro page, intrigued.

Early MG Metros between '82 & '84 had these type heads. This is a leaded type casting I would suggest an overhaul before fitting as it is now at least 28years old!!

Cheers guys
Weird thing. I have just taken the head off my engine and its tha same so no need to buy :)
However I was told, when I bought the car, that it could run unleaded. Any way to check?

Only way is to remove an exhaust valve and check that the valve seat is an insert. The insert will be very hard. Original seats for leaded were just cut in the cast iron, which is soft and easy to cut. Very carefully try to scratch the seat with something sharp. You aren't trying to damage it just check if it is hardened. A hard unleaded seat will not be marked, whereas a cast leaded one will be soft and easily marked. Hope this helps.
