On the topic of rev counters I'm planning on fitting one into my custom dash, the problem is there's no wiring in the loom for a rev counter as the original car didn't have one.

I don't mind retro fitting the rev counter and wrapping the wires into the loom before I close it all back up but what wires do I need? Is it as simple as a live feed from the plus side of the coil and an earth? Or is there more to it than that

Sorry to ask but I don't get on too well with wiring diagrams

Yes that's almost correct. Arev counter will need a Positive feed, earth feed, and pulse feed from the coil.
On the 3-clock set up, the earth comes from the circuit board attached to the back of the dials. On the rear of the rev, counter, the spade connector is the positive feed from the fuse box, the bullet connector is for the pulse feed from the positive side of the coil.
