Hi, my next door neighbour has a couple of old engines in their garage and thinks hat one might be a Mini engine. I have taken a couple of photos and thought I had be nine set no but the number i have is cast onto the rear of the engine casing and after getting it (i was in a rush) i read that the engine details are on a plate riveted to the front of the casing under the thermostat casing. Anyway I can't get back to look again but they are going to send me some more photos.
If it helps the number I got from the casing is:
12A497 WMC 23758F

If the number is cast onto the back of the block thats not the engine number its a casting number.
Like you say engine number riveted onto block next to thermostat housing.
simple thing look at though if no plate.
Back of the block, are there 2 cover plates under where the head fixes on, If so most likely won't be a 1275. Only 1275 cooper S got the cover plates. But most 1275's don't

12A497 Block casting number is either 998 or 1098 with tapped chest covers. Definitely not a 1275.
