with just those small mods a stock carb or the newer HIF38 will be best

With it all standard apart from the exhaust, an HS4 carb will be ideal. Your exhaust should be a maximum of 1.75" internal diameter, although for best power a 1.625" int. dia. would be better. Final exit must be the same diameter as the rest of the pipe and single exit pipe.
With a more modified engine the 1.75" int. dia with a 3-into-1 exhaust manifold is better and with that you can use either a single HS4 (or HIF38) or twin HS2's, as fitted to the original MG1100, Cooper 998, A-H Sprite, etc.

When my engine went sick a few years ago I put in a 1098 and ran it on a LCB and 1.75 exhaust and 1.25 twin cooper carbs and it went well for what it was, it didn't rev like a 998 but it was never designed to and it was quite torquie on the road
