They've been bled today and it's been up for a good run. The brakes work properly if you press the pedal to the floor, lift off then press again? They do break when you put your foot down on the pedal the first time but very very slowly.

No, that's not very good at all.

What age is the car? Has it been off the road for a while? Any new parts like the master cylinder or the brake hoses?

Still air in the system. Do you have disc brakes? have you fitted the calipers on the correct side so the bleed nipple is facing up?

It's a 1974, been off the road around 15 years. It's had 4 front brake cylinders and 2 new hoses

As Rich says there's air in the system. If its been sitting for 15 years I'd imagine the seals in the master cylinder are shot. Have a feel around inside the car on top of the pedal box and see if its wet. If it is....wash your hands...it's a sign the master cylinder is leaking.

Also if you can get some of the brake fluid out of the master cylinder have a look to see if its clean or full of black bits. The black bits will be corroded seals.

Yes, be careful when you do it, keep an eye on the fluid level. Maybe bring a friend round to depress the pedal for you?

If there's air in the lines, it'd still be there no matter how fast you press the pedal. I too suspect the seals have perished. Pump up the pedal and see if it sinks slowly. It won't hurt to whip the drums off and look for leakage under the cylinder boots. In contrast, master cylinders can lose pressure without any external leakage. It could be the brakes just need adjusting though.

adjust the brakes up before bleeding, otherwise you will struggle to remove all the air.
