Hellooooooooooooo!
Long time no post, mainly due to selling my Mini. I did however sell it to a friend and promised to do any little jobs on it that they require.
So here i am, cap in hand, requesting some info from you clever bunch...

The gear lever is a little sloppy, now i know this is relatively common, but it has a habit of pulling out of second. Before i have to pull the engine and look at changing the gearbox, i would much prefer to see if i can delay that a little.
Can anybody tell me what parts "could" be worn in the linkage set up that could help with my little problem. Engine steadies are good and engine mounts are ok, front bush was also changed (gearbox end), so i'm really just looking at the gearstick housing end. Hope that makes sense...

For interest, my current car is a Triumph Herald, if Roy (bmcecosse) sees this, yes, i went back to Triumph!!

Thanks in advance!

does it do it on over-run, eg coming into a roundabout or such like, if so most likely to be worn dogs on the 2nd gear, and synchro hub and a selector fork which is worn.... don't suppose it crunches into 2nd does it ?

also check it's not got one of them concertina type gaskets on the rod linkage at the back of the box, they are a known issue when they get hard and pop the gearstick out of gear...

What Mini do you have Early remote change of the later type rod change? things to look for are the nylon cup under the gear lever for wear, if its a remote change the splines are tight on the retaining bolts where they go into the gear box change mechanism, if its the rod type then check the long arm under the rod change is tight at the gearbox end and the rubber cotton real mounts are not really old and soft and split, much more than the above its inside.

When you say it has a habit of pulling out of second when does it do this ? under power or whan backing off ? just a bit more info may help, but if the above checks prove ok then its looking like a engine strip and investigate the 2nd gear syncro hub

Aye up folks,
Yep, out of the game so long i have decided to give you no info! Fool.

Right, it is a rod change box, as that man guess-works has guessed, it does indeed do it on the over-run.
I was pretty sure the problem was as stated, it has never come out of gear on acceleration, but just wanted to delay an engine out job a little.
I think if it is a case of engine out, i would be more inclined to fit a complete engine/box combo as the engine is fairly high spec, it could be stripped to get new engine price back. They aren't too fussed on the extra power it has you see.
So could new bushes delay it?
Forgot to say, it doesn't crunch at all, all very smooth.

A yes -didn't you have a Triumph before cally?? Is this the same one ?? One day you will move up to a proper Triumph....the TR7 ! As for the jumping out - unless it only started after you fitted the seal to the gearchange - it is indeed likely to be the dog teeth on 2nd... just tell the owner not to do 'over run' in 2nd gear! You could just check the two rubber bobbins supporting the gear lever box - if these are soft they may allow the lever to be pulled out of gear....but it is clutching at straws i'm afraid....

Not a little job I,m afraid. I would go along with Guessworks diagnosis. By all means check the remote as suggested, but it does sound like synchro hubs. Guessworks does a mean gearbox repair, refurb service in my opinion.

Refurb is defo out of the question, as much as i would love to suggest it, the new owners will not be able to afford it. Heard nothing but good things about guessworks though.
Will have a gander at the bobbins then, no harm in looking i suppose.

Different Herald Roy, the old one was a crusty estate, this one considerably less crusty!
Can't handle the tax on a TR7!!!
