hello i am currently thinking about how im going to design my dashboard and what im going to put onto it.
i am looking at the idea of either a tablet or a computer in the middle of the dash. i was also looking at using the tablet as a speedo and some gauges as i believe i have seen this before.
i wanted to know what tablets or computers are people using?
what software/apps are you using for the speedo etc...?
also are the speedos that are being used acceptable for mots etc... so i dont need to have another speedo ?
hope you can help any advice welcome
cheers
jack

He used a digital speedo kit, the link is in the topic somewhere.

Do any of you know if it's legal to use a tablet or something as a speedo ?

Speedo isn't tested in MoT, though It has been discussed as an addition. You could look at the IVA test manual to see what it specifies.

It's Ok so long as it always shows the speed. Ones where there are different screens showing different info are OK so long as the speed is always shown on the screen but if there's a setting where the speed isn't displayed then it's not legal. It's also classed as a display screen so it's not allowed to show anything other than information about the car's systems or possibly it's immediate surroundings like a reversing camera (I'm not 100% on this last part).

But as others have said they aren't checked on an MOT so you can get away with all sorts until it gets a proper inspection (i.e. if it's been involved in a serious incident or if you get a copper who doesn't like the look of it/you.

Ok so Would it be ok if I put a regular speedo under the dash not directly in view and displayed my phone or iPad in the dash for my use, because then I still have the regular speedo in the car ?

Probably not, as stated above you cannot have any other screens that don't display the speedo, and an ipad has alot of other screens. And I wouldn't trust a ipad or any other tablet for that. Maybe a fixed pc, but never something that can be removed.

But if I have my regular speedo mounted in the car as well that can be counted as my fixed speedo if that makes sense ?

It's like having seat belts in your car but only wearing them when the police stops you. Doesn't seems to be save to me. It's possible that it's allowed by law, but just doesn't seem right.

The problem is "not directly in view". There are certain items that have to be within the drivers sight or reach when they are sat in their normal driving position and with the seatbelt fastened and I'll guarantee that the speedo is one of them.

If you're thinking of a GPS speedo, I'm not sure that'd be acceptable. It certainly wouldn't pass an IVA, where the speed is checked on a rolling road. How about a pushbike speedo, they're small enough to be unobtrusive but still in view.

I'm using software by Parker Performance called DashXL. This is running on Android 4.1 on a Nexus 7 tablet. Although they do a n iOS or Windows based version. You can create your own dash design as I have, or use one of their standard ones.

I've done a day and a night mode. It does however rely on OBD2 data to work. I've tested it on the wifes Fiesta and it works a treat via a bluetooth ODB2 transmitter. I've got the complete loom and ECU's from an 05 plate Mini Cooper, just need to graft what I need from that into the car and make it all work. Shouldn't be too difficult - famous last words!

The bit at the bottom is for the indicators, fuel warning, high beam, oil pressure warning, alternator charge light etc.
I think the only problem will be an odometer.

Yh I've been looking at these bicycle speedo with odometer that look like the acewell but a lot cheaper and use one of them for a speedo and a small android tablet in the centre of the dash for music and sat mac instead of all in one if that makes sense
