Adjusted up correctly via the square adjuster on the back of the backplate, at the top (iirc) ? Shoes fitted the right way and correctly too? You would have had to have the hub off too to fit a new backplate, was the rear wheel bearing correctly tightened?

Handbrakes slack, all baggy, adjusters right out and the shoes are together

check that the quadrants on the subframe that these are letting the shoe return properly as the cable may be slack from them to the handbrake but may still be tight between them and the wheel

after struggling to get the drum on

Why did you struggle to get the drum on? if the shoes are in their proper place and the adjusters are backed off with the handbrake off then the drums should practically drop on.

Did the hub turn freely before the drum went on? this at least would give us an idea where the problem is but if it was hard to get the drum on then I'd suggest that is a strong hint that something is worng with the brakes.

the shoes may just be miss aligned,

slacken off the swuare adjuster all the way and tug on the hand brake cable a few times, that should centralize them in the drum and allow rotation..

if not get the drum off and have a look.

have you got the correct shoes and are they on the right way round ?

Generally if bits don't fit their either on wrong or the wrong part !

Got the wheels spinning freely now, grinded a bit out the drum and the shoes themselves and they fit:) However, now the brakes don't work properly and it takes a few pumps to get them working so it locks on. They've been bled several times?
