Did you have a worn edge on the drums stopping it going on ?

I'm not sure what you mean. My dad grinded a bit off the inside of the drum and got told by minispares to cut a bit of the shoes so they sit closer together.

I'm now really concerned about this. Please get someone who knows what they are doing to look at this because I have no confidence whatsoever from your replies that you or your dad have a scooby-do what you are doing and where brakes are concerned that's a really bad combination.

That doesn't sound right, that means the drum is no longer round, from where you have ground the inner parts of it. Probably why they're not working properly now.

Usually to clean the drum you do it in a lathe, and turn down the inside evenly to get it clean again. This will also ensure its round.

I've had a couple of sets of non-gen shoes recently that are simply the wrong size - the friction material is too thick and the drum won't go over the shoes.

Try another set and see if the problem is still there.
